One AirPod Not Working? Check Charging, Balance, and Reset

Fix one silent or quiet AirPod by checking separate battery levels, charging contacts, speaker mesh, audio balance, one-ear playback, and the correct reset method.

Separate no charge, no sound, and low volume

One AirPod can seem dead because it did not charge, because its speaker is blocked, because the left-right balance is shifted, or because the earbud itself failed. Record each side's battery level and charging symbol before forgetting the device or resetting it.

Charging, playback, and volume problems need different checks.

Confirm that each AirPod is charging

Charge the case first. Put both AirPods in their matching positions, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds. Open the case near a paired iPhone or iPad and inspect the battery reading for the left and right AirPod separately. A case-level percentage alone does not prove that both earbuds made contact.

If one side has no charging indicator, reseat it and inspect for visible debris. Follow Apple's cleaning instructions for the exact model. Do not insert a metal pin or sharp object into the charging port or contacts, and do not return a wet earbud to the case.

  1. Charge the case with a known-good cable or compatible charger.
  2. Seat both AirPods, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
  3. Open the case near the paired device and compare both battery readings.
  4. If one side still does not charge, clean only by Apple's model-specific method and let it dry fully.

Test the problem AirPod by itself

Put the suspected AirPod in your ear and leave the other AirPod in the case with the lid closed. Confirm that AirPods are connected, then play familiar speech or music. Repeat with the other side. This reveals whether failure follows one earbud, one playback device, or one app.

Use more than one audio source and avoid a clip with intentionally separated left and right channels. If the problem earbud works alone, return both to the case for another 30 seconds and test them together again before changing settings.

If one AirPod is quiet, check mesh and audio balance

Inspect the microphone and speaker mesh for debris and follow Apple's cleaning page for your model. Do not rinse AirPods under water, scrape the mesh with a sharp object, or use abrasive material. Allow every component to dry fully before use or charging.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual and place the Balance slider in the center. A shifted slider affects stereo playback across headphones and can imitate a hardware fault. If another pair also sounds biased to the same side, the device setting is the stronger clue.

Reset only after charging and balance checks

A reset clears pairing and customized settings, so it is an escalation step rather than the first move. Identify the exact AirPods and charging-case model before following Apple's current reset guide. AirPods generations with a rear setup button and newer cases that use front-case taps do not share one universal gesture.

Forget the AirPods in Bluetooth settings, place both earbuds in the case, and follow the model-specific sequence until the status light shows the documented amber and white pattern. Reconnect, confirm both battery readings, and restore needed settings before testing again.

Do microphone and ear-detection settings cause this?

Automatic Ear Detection can affect play and pause behavior when a sensor is dirty or fit detection is inconsistent. Temporarily disabling it can be a useful comparison, but it cannot repair an AirPod that does not charge.

The Microphone setting chooses which AirPod handles calls, recordings, and Siri. It does not decide whether music plays through a speaker. Investigate that setting when callers cannot hear you but stereo music works normally, not when one earbud has no playback at all.

When the evidence points to service

If the same AirPod fails to charge or play on multiple devices after the case, cleaning, balance, and model-correct reset checks, the earbud or its charging position is the likely remaining source. Record the model, serial number, battery screenshots, and steps already completed before contacting Apple.

Do not repeatedly drain the battery, strike the earbud, or open the case to prove a hardware fault. Apple can inspect and replace an individual AirPod or charging case; coverage and cost depend on the diagnosis, warranty, and local consumer law.
