iCloud Backup Failed? Fix Storage, Stuck Backups, or a Gray Button

Can't back up your iPhone to iCloud? Compare Next Backup Size with available storage, troubleshoot a stuck or unavailable backup, and verify it actually finished.

Choose the path that matches your message

This guide is for a backup attempt that did not finish. For a comparison of backup methods, use the related iPhone backup guide below. Record the exact message and attempt time so an old warning is not confused with a new failure.

Why it can fail when you still have space

In Settings → your name → iCloud → Storage (or Manage Account Storage) → Backups, select this device and allow Next Backup Size to calculate. Compare it with unused cloud space, not free space on the iPhone.

Example, not a device measurement: a 50 GB plan with 47 GB used leaves 3 GB. A 6 GB estimate does not fit just because the plan says 50 GB. Review expendable content or plan capacity; do not gamble your only recovery copy on another attempt.

Keep troubleshooting reversible

Do not remove an employer's management profile to enable a button. Ask the administrator whether backup is permitted. For other failures, change one condition at a time and note the result; changing accounts, settings, and stored copies together makes the outcome harder to diagnose.

Check where photos and app data actually live

iCloud Photos uses synchronization rather than a duplicate inside the daily backup. Without it, the backup may contain photos. Backup size alone therefore cannot prove that your photo library is protected.

For recordings, projects, or chats, inspect the app's export options. Separate replaceable downloads from unique work before making a cleanup list. Leave uncertain items intact.

Verify a new successful backup

Start a manual backup in Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup and keep Wi-Fi connected. Check that the displayed completed date and time are newer than this attempt. An enabled switch or an older success is not confirmation.

Automatic backups normally need power, Wi-Fi, and a locked screen. If migration is urgent, follow the linked computer-backup guide and keep the original phone until recovery is verified. Give support the error, attempt time, system version, and capacity figures, never your account password.
