Identify which charging problem you actually have
No charging symbol, unusually slow charging, repeated connection and disconnection, a stop near 80%, Accessory Not Supported, Charging On Hold, and a liquid-detection alert are different branches. Record the exact message, current percentage, charger, and ambient temperature before changing equipment.
A powered-off phone may not light immediately. Apple's sequence allows the device to charge for half an hour, then uses a force restart and another half hour of charging. Repeatedly unplugging it after a few minutes does not test that sequence.
| Symptom | Check first | Do not start with |
|---|---|---|
| No response | Outlet, adapter, cable, port, then timed charge and restart | Erasing the phone |
| Charging slowly | Power source, cable, temperature, and active workload | One unverified replacement accessory |
| Stops near 80% | Charge Limit, optimized charging, and temperature messages | Assuming the battery is dead |
| Liquid alert | Disconnect and air-dry | Heat, compressed air, swabs, or rice |
Test the power path one component at a time
Use a wall outlet and connect the iPhone directly to the charger without a hub or adapter in between. Confirm that the outlet works and that the cable, power adapter, and outlet connections are firm. Do not use a cable with broken insulation or an adapter with damaged or bent prongs.
Look for obvious debris or physical damage in the charging port. Do not push metal, a cotton swab, or paper into the connector. A cable and adapter already proven on another compatible device give you a meaningful comparison; a second unknown accessory does not.
- Move to a wall outlet you know works.
- Connect a known-good, undamaged adapter and cable directly.
- Check for a loose plug, deformation, or visible port debris.
- Leave the phone connected for 30 minutes without gaming, navigation, or hotspot use.
- If it remains unresponsive, force restart it and continue charging for another 30 minutes.
A stop near 80% or Charging On Hold may be intentional
Optimized Battery Charging can delay a full charge based on your routine. iPhone 15 and later can also use a Charge Limit. Open Settings → Battery and read the active setting or message before blaming the cable or battery.
Very hot or cold conditions can slow or pause charging until the phone returns to a normal temperature. Move the phone and charger to a moderate, shaded, ventilated place, stop demanding work, and lock the screen. Do not use a refrigerator or ice pack to force cooling.
Protect the connector after a liquid-detection alert
Immediately disconnect the cable from the iPhone and power source. Do not reconnect until the connector, both cable ends, and accessory are dry. Tap the iPhone gently against your hand with the connector facing down, then leave it in a dry area with airflow. Try once after at least 30 minutes; if the alert returns, complete drying can take up to 24 hours.
Do not use an external heat source or compressed air. Do not insert a cotton swab or paper towel, and do not put the iPhone in rice. An emergency override can corrode wet pins and cause permanent damage. Wireless charging is an option only when the back of the phone is dry.
For intermittent wireless charging, check alignment and heat
Remove a thick, metallic, or poorly fitting case, center the iPhone on a compatible charger, and confirm that the pad has a suitable power adapter. Notification vibration can shift the phone off the coil, while heat can make iOS reduce the charging rate.
If wireless charging works but every known-good cable fails, focus on the cable path and port. If cable charging works but several compatible wireless chargers fail, focus on case fit, alignment, power delivery, and device compatibility.
Stop troubleshooting when damage or repeated failure appears
Arrange Apple or authorized service if the phone still will not charge or start after the timed charge and restart sequence, repeatedly disconnects with known-good accessories, or has a loose, scorched, or deformed port.
For liquid intrusion, swelling, a lifted display, unusual odor, smoke, or extreme heat, stop charging and do not squeeze or open the device. Disconnect power, keep it away from combustible material, and follow local safety guidance for professional handling.
