Choose the purpose before the format
Inspect capacity, file system and existing contents before placing irreplaceable files on a new drive.
| Purpose | Format consideration | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Mac working files | APFS, optionally encrypted | Keep the encryption password safe |
| Ordinary Mac/Windows file exchange | exFAT | Do not use the only copy as an exchange disk |
| Photos library | APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) | Not a device used for Time Machine backups |
| Existing NTFS disk | Copy and verify data first | Read-only access is not a reason to erase immediately |
If formatting is actually necessary
Erasing deletes the selected disk or volume. A correctly working disk does not need reformatting just to follow this guide. Continue only after confirming the purpose and verifying a backup.
- Disconnect unrelated external disks to reduce selection mistakes.
- In Disk Utility, confirm name, capacity and connection type; do not select the internal startup disk.
- Verify another readable copy before erasing the intended target.
- Choose a recognizable name and suitable format; check the partition scheme when initializing a whole device.
- Copy test files, eject and reconnect, then verify readability before a bulk migration.
Copy, verify, then consider deleting originals
Copy ordinary folders first. Compare file counts and sizes and open representative large and recent files. Consider checksums for important material. Create an independent backup before removing the internal originals.
Do not drag the entire Applications, system or home folder to the SSD. Use each app's documented installation, media-location or cache settings. Apps that depend on an unavailable external disk may fail to open projects or start normally.
Handle a Photos library separately
Quit Photos, copy the library to an appropriate external disk and open it from the new location. Check the System Photo Library setting if using iCloud Photos. Avoid network shares, cloud-sync folders and devices used for Time Machine backups.
Keep originals and backups until photos, videos and library settings are verified. Connect the SSD before launching Photos; a missing external library can result in a new empty default library, not proof that all pictures were deleted.
Separate read-only access, disconnects and slow transfers
For read-only access, check the file system and permissions before considering any destructive action. For disconnects, stop large writes and try a known-good short cable directly connected to the Mac. Repeated disconnects or I/O errors make protecting readable data the priority.
Throughput is limited by the port, cable, enclosure, SSD and workload. A USB-C connector or Thunderbolt socket alone does not establish end-to-end speed. Compare the same files on the same connection and distinguish sustained transfer from a brief cache burst.
Close dependent apps and eject through Finder before unplugging. A successful migration means files remain usable after reconnection and have an independent backup, not merely that internal free space increased.
