iMessage or FaceTime Stuck on Waiting for Activation? Fix the Phone Number

Fix Waiting for Activation, Activation Unsuccessful, or a missing phone number by checking connectivity, date and time, SIM/eSIM status, SMS capability, and the 24-hour carrier verification window.

Identify the problem before changing settings

Waiting for Activation, Activation Unsuccessful, An Error Occurred During Activation, or Unable to Contact the iMessage Server belongs to the activation path. A missing, greyed-out, or endlessly spinning number points to the SIM/eSIM and number-selection path.

Green bubbles, a red exclamation mark, or one contact not receiving a message does not automatically mean activation failed. An explicit message that the account is blocked for spam is an account-support issue, not a reason to keep resetting the network.

Choosing the right path prevents message-delivery symptoms from being mistaken for activation failure.

Check connectivity, software, and date and time

Make sure the iPhone can reach the internet over Wi‑Fi or cellular data, install the latest iOS version available for the device, and verify the date, time, and time zone in Settings > General > Date & Time.

FaceTime is not available in every country, region, or carrier environment. A managed work or school device may also restrict it, so confirm availability before repeating recovery steps.

Why phone-number activation uses SMS and may take 24 hours

An iPhone may send an SMS to activate its phone number, and the carrier may charge for it. A suspended or prepaid line, an international-SMS block, or an account restriction can stop verification even when data works.

Apple says a carrier can take up to 24 hours to verify the number with Apple. If a spinner appears beside the number, the iPhone is already retrying. Repeated toggles, sign-outs, and SIM swaps make the timeline harder to diagnose.

Run Apple's activation sequence once

After confirming the network, clock, and mobile line, use one clean restart sequence and note when you turned the services back on.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Messages and turn off iMessage.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > FaceTime and turn off FaceTime.
  3. Restart the iPhone.
  4. Turn iMessage and FaceTime back on.
  5. Leave the active line available and wait; do not keep toggling while the number shows a spinner.

If the phone number is missing, greyed out, or email-only

The number must belong to an active SIM or eSIM in the device. Confirm that line is enabled in Settings > Cellular, then check Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive and the FaceTime settings for a checkmark beside the expected number and Apple Account.

On a dual-SIM iPhone, verify which line owns the number. For a Mac or iPad, first complete activation on the iPhone and use the same Apple Account on every device instead of signing out everywhere at once.

New iPhone, eSIM, and duplicate-number cases

If eSIM setup happened after the initial iPhone setup, toggle iMessage off and on once after the line becomes active. After transferring a number, check whether an old physical SIM or eSIM with that same number remains on the device.

Apple documented an iOS 26 case where the same phone number on an active and an inactive SIM could block activation. Update to iOS 26.1 or later, or remove only the confirmed inactive duplicate. Do not delete the working eSIM as an experiment; ask the carrier if you cannot identify it safely.

Use email temporarily or try online activation

While the number is pending, select the Apple Account email address in Send & Receive and FaceTime. Tell trusted contacts which address is temporary so they do not keep sending to the inactive number.

Apple also provides online activation at apple.co/IMFT-mac. Check spam or junk folders for its email. This cannot repair a suspended line or an international-SMS block, and no legitimate helper needs your password or verification code.

After 24 hours, decide who should fix it

Ask the carrier to confirm that the line is active, can send and receive international SMS, and has no billing or messaging restriction. If ordinary SMS also fails, fix the mobile line first.

Contact Apple after the carrier confirms the line and SMS capability but activation still fails, or when the account is blocked for spam or the online-activation email never arrives. Share the iOS version, carrier, exact error, and timeline—not your password, complete number, or verification code.

Verify the result

An enabled switch is not proof of activation. Look for a checkmark beside the phone number in Send & Receive and FaceTime, start a new conversation with the expected sender address, then test iMessage and FaceTime with a trusted contact.

If email works while the number still spins, the service is only partially configured and phone-number verification is still pending. Keep the timeline and carrier response instead of restarting the whole checklist.
