What's New in iOS 27? Features, Supported iPhones, and Limits

A practical iOS 27 feature guide covering system improvements, Siri AI, Photos, Safari, child safety, device requirements, regional limits, and delayed features.

Start with three different compatibility checks

Apple groups iOS 27 changes into Siri AI, Apple Intelligence in apps, child safety, OS improvements, and additional features. A feature may require a compatible OS, a newer device, and an eligible language or region at the same time.

Use the table as a routing guide rather than a promise that every supported iPhone receives identical performance or controls. The device Software Update screen and Apple's feature-availability documentation are the final checks.

Identify the feature layer before troubleshooting why a control is missing.

Core changes most compatible iPhones can receive

Apple says iOS 27 refines Liquid Glass readability, contrast, icon detail, and appearance controls. It also describes CPU scheduling, memory, display rendering, search, and smoother Wi-Fi-to-cellular transitions as system-level improvements.

Apple reports up to 30% faster app launches, up to 70% faster Photos loading, and up to 80% faster AirDrop transfers in its test conditions. Those are maximum measured claims, not guarantees for an older phone. Battery condition, free storage, network quality, apps, and post-update indexing still affect the result.

Siri AI and Apple Intelligence need a second device list

Apple currently lists iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone Air as eligible iPhone hardware for Apple Intelligence. An iPhone 11 through a non-Pro iPhone 15 may support iOS 27 without supporting Apple Intelligence.

Eligible hardware must also meet software, language, region, and storage requirements. Apple says some devices may use up to 8 GB for Apple Intelligence resources and some newer devices may use up to 14 GB. Device language and Siri language must match a supported language.

iOS 27 compatibility and Apple Intelligence eligibility are separate lists.

Regional and language limits can hide advertised features

Apple says Apple Intelligence currently does not work on supported devices purchased in China mainland. For an eligible device purchased elsewhere, it also will not work when the user is in China mainland and the Apple Account country or region is China mainland.

Availability also varies by language and individual feature. Do not treat a region or language workaround as a guarantee, and do not assume an overseas demonstration applies to your device. Check Apple's current support and feature-availability pages before making a purchase or update decision.

Photos, Safari, Passwords, and Shortcuts

On eligible Apple Intelligence setups, Photos adds Spatial Reframing, Extend, and an improved Clean Up tool. Safari can organize tabs by topic and monitor page changes with Notify Me, while Shortcuts can be created from a natural-language description. Some server-dependent features may have usage limits.

The Passwords app can flag weak or compromised credentials, while Apple marks some automated update capability as coming in a future software update. If a named feature is absent, verify the exact iOS point release, hardware, language, and region before attempting any unsupported activation method.

Child safety is a separate set of practical updates

Parents can select system apps during setup, review a child's request to visit a new website with Ask to Browse, and use expanded Communication Safety. Time Allowances and Schedules add category-based limits and different access by time or day.

These controls depend on correct Family Sharing, child-account, age, and Screen Time setup. They supplement rather than replace supervision and conversation, and their presence should not be used as a test of whether iOS 27 installed correctly.

Smaller changes that may matter more in daily use

Accessibility updates include richer image descriptions, generated video captions, and caption translation. iCloud Shared Albums improve participation from Android and Windows through iCloud.com and add full-resolution sharing, filters, and reactions. Health, Maps, AirPods Custom EQ, and GymKit also receive targeted changes.

Smarter Home features may require Apple Intelligence, compatible HomeKit Secure Video cameras, and the appropriate service setup. AirPods EQ and GymKit likewise depend on compatible accessories. Treat each as a separate compatibility check.

Should these features decide whether you update?

For a supported device with a verified backup and compatible critical apps, ongoing maintenance, security fixes, and core system improvements are usually stronger reasons to update than one headline feature. If Siri AI or advanced photo tools are the only reason, verify the second device list and your region first.

After updating, record the iOS version and build, then check only the features relevant to you. One missing control does not prove the installation failed. For work-critical phones, verify banking, authentication, device-management, and accessory apps before scheduling the update.

  1. Open Settings → General → About and record the model, iOS version, and build.
  2. Check Software Update for a pending point release.
  3. For Apple Intelligence, verify hardware, device and Siri language, region, account region, and free storage.
  4. For AirPods, GymKit, or Home features, verify the accessory, firmware, and service requirements separately.
  5. Save the exact feature name and screenshots before contacting Apple Support.
