Locate the backup without editing its contents
In Finder, use Go → Go to Folder with ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/. Alternatively, connect and select the iPhone, open General → Manage Backups, then use Show In Finder on the selected backup.
Do not identify a device from an opaque folder name or selectively remove unfamiliar files inside its backup. A missing folder is not proof that no backup exists: check whether you used iCloud, another computer or another Mac account.
Archive, delete, or keep?
Apple warns that deleted backups cannot be recovered. Archiving prevents a later backup from replacing that version. Our decision checklist below is not a guarantee of recoverability.
| Situation | Suggested action |
|---|---|
| Retired device; important data and replacement backup checked | Consider removing the obsolete backup |
| Keeping a pre-upgrade recovery point | Archive, without expecting space savings |
| Only backup or lost device | Keep it while assessing recovery needs |
| Unknown owner | Identify before deleting |
Remove only the backup you no longer need
In Manage Backups, right-click the intended entry and choose Delete. If Finder cannot see the device, resolve recognition first rather than using bulk removal commands.
- Record device and date; wait for backup or restore work to finish.
- Check your alternative recovery source before proceeding.
- Delete only the identified, obsolete entry.
- Reopen the list and verify that the backups you meant to keep remain.
Check encryption before treating two backups as equivalent
A lock beside a backup identifies encryption; its date is also shown. Encrypted backups can include Health information and saved passwords that an unencrypted backup does not. Restoring requires the backup password, and resetting that password does not unlock older encrypted copies.
If the phone is lost or the only copy is currently unusable, preserve it and seek help before deleting it. An inaccessible recovery source is not automatically a disposable file.
Verify Mac storage, not iCloud quota
Local disk capacity and iCloud quota are separate. This workflow targets the computer copy; use our iCloud storage guide for cloud capacity. Avoid deleting from both places in one troubleshooting attempt.
On recent macOS versions, record available space in System Settings → General → Storage, then compare after the operation and refreshed statistics. If the change is smaller than expected, check the disk and ongoing writes rather than clearing whole system folders.
Verify the remaining backup dates, access to encryption passwords and whether the blocked download or update now works. We have not performed a device restore test or measured a fixed GB saving for this guide.
