M4 vs M4 Pro: CPU, GPU, Memory and Which Mac Needs Pro

Compare Apple's M4 and M4 Pro specs across 2024 Macs: CPU and GPU configurations, unified memory, bandwidth and ports. Choose for your workload without invented benchmark claims.

Short answer: what does M4 Pro add?

M4 Pro adds more performance CPU cores, more GPU cores, a higher unified-memory ceiling, and greater memory bandwidth than M4. The 2024 M4 Pro Mac mini and corresponding MacBook Pro also provide Thunderbolt 5 where their M4 counterparts provide Thunderbolt 4.

A larger number on a spec sheet is not a fixed compile, export or gaming speedup. Light office work, browsing, photo editing and small projects can respond differently to the same upgrade. We have not benchmarked the two chips under matched conditions and do not claim a performance multiplier or payback period.

M4 Pro is not one fixed core configuration

The 2024 Mac mini uses a 10-core CPU/10-core GPU M4. Its base M4 Pro has a 12-core CPU/16-core GPU, with a 14-core/20-core option. The 14-inch 2024 MacBook Pro also offers M4 Pro in 12-core/16-core and 14-core/20-core variants. A listing that says only ‘M4 Pro’ does not identify the exact machine being compared.

The 2024 M4 Mac mini starts at 16GB unified memory and can be configured to 24GB or 32GB; its M4 Pro version starts at 24GB and can reach 48GB or 64GB. Storage, cooling, displays and ports are product choices too. For used or remaining stock, confirm the chip, memory and model year in About This Mac, then read Apple's specs for that exact model.

When extra Pro resources can matter

Start with your peak memory use, number of simultaneous apps or Simulators, project size, and any device that specifically requires Thunderbolt 5. If you routinely need more than 32GB unified memory, the M4 configuration ceiling may rule it out before benchmark scores matter.

Large builds alongside multiple Simulators, complex 3D scenes or sustained GPU work may benefit from the extra cores, but core counts cannot tell you your own elapsed time. Video workflows also depend on codec, media engine, source footage, disk and memory. Both chips list hardware support for H.264, HEVC, ProRes and AV1 decoding; ‘Pro’ alone does not prove every export will be faster.

For browsers, documents, light image work and a single development environment, first buy enough memory and internal storage for the real workload. Heavy swapping from insufficient memory can become a more immediate problem than the chip tier.

Check Thunderbolt and displays on the Mac, not just the chip

Apple lists rear Thunderbolt 4 ports for the 2024 M4 Mac mini and Thunderbolt 5 for its M4 Pro version; the matching 2024 MacBook Pro models have their own port specifications. These are facts about those complete Macs, not a promise that every device named M4 has identical ports.

For several high-resolution displays or fast external storage, check the exact Mac, port, cable, dock and destination device together. Thunderbolt 5's headline capability does not guarantee an SSD's sustained transfer rate. Use the separate Mac mini display guide for the full monitor combinations rather than inferring them from a chip table.

A buying test that avoids invented benchmarks

List the three tasks you run most often and identify the present bottleneck: memory pressure, sustained CPU, GPU rendering, disk waiting or an external-display limit. Record app versions, file sizes, concurrent tools and completion time. If a candidate Mac is available to try, repeat the same work and settings on it while checking free memory, noise and temperature.

If hands-on testing is impossible, use Apple's specifications to exclude configurations that miss a hard requirement, then check the application's published requirements, return terms and actual price. Current Mac mini generations differ from the 2024 M4/M4 Pro pair; the separate upgrade guide covers that cross-generation question. Do not treat this 2024 comparison as a list of every Mac currently sold.
