Should You Upgrade Mac mini M4 to M6? Check the Real Bottleneck

Already own an M4 Mac mini? Compare Apple’s M6 memory ceiling, ports, displays, networking and qualified performance claims against your actual workload before replacing it.

Measure the problem you want to solve

This is an upgrade decision for owners of a 2024 M4 Mac mini, not a first-setup guide. In Apple menu → About This Mac, record the chip, unified memory and storage. Pick one repeatable weekly task—building a project, exporting photos, editing video or running a local model—and record its software version, input size, elapsed time and Memory Pressure in Activity Monitor.

If the problem is a full internal disk, first distinguish movable files from System Data. An external SSD and a separate backup might solve the capacity problem without replacing a computer. Extra capacity itself is not a backup.

  1. Record the current M4 memory, SSD and peripheral configuration.
  2. Time one reproducible slow task and note Memory Pressure.
  3. Identify whether compute, memory capacity, disk, displays or networking is the actual limit.
  4. Price only configurations that address that limit, including migration and peripheral costs.

What the Apple specifications actually change

These are Apple's stated Mac mini configurations, not our same-workload benchmarks. Core counts and memory bandwidth do not translate into a fixed speedup for your build, export or model.

Read Apple's speed claims with the test conditions

Apple's M6 announcement states up to 4x AI performance, up to 2x graphics performance and up to 40% faster CPU performance versus M4 in selected tests. Its footnote identifies the comparison M4 as a 10-core CPU / 10-core GPU Mac mini with 32GB memory and a 2TB SSD; Apple says it tested in July 2026. These are vendor results under specified conditions, not measurements of every M4 owner's workload or tests run by this site.

Before spending, look for independent results using your application, project size and memory configuration. For local models, first estimate the actual model and context memory requirement: a faster processor does not make an oversized model fit. Our M4/32GB Qwen field note illustrates one older-machine workload, not a prediction for M6.

When M5 Pro is the relevant 2026 option

If you repeatedly hit a 32GB memory ceiling, require a Thunderbolt 5 peripheral, or need three 6K 60Hz displays, compare the M5 Pro configuration. Apple lists up to 64GB unified memory and rear Thunderbolt 5 ports for it. Its M6 three-display example is two displays up to 6K 60Hz plus a third up to 5K 60Hz over Thunderbolt or 4K 60Hz over HDMI.

The smaller number in M5 Pro's name does not make it an older M4 alternative. Thunderbolt's headline bandwidth is not an external SSD's sustained speed; enclosure, cable, disk and cooling all matter. A single-display office workload may have no reason to pay for the Pro configuration.

Migrate and verify before retiring the old Mac

Check that licenses, plug-ins and work files can move, and make a recoverable backup while the M4 remains usable. On the new Mac, rerun the same task with the same app version, then test display modes, external disks, network and backup. The upgrade has solved the problem only when the original task works as intended.

  1. Keep the old Mac and a recently verified backup during migration.
  2. List required plug-ins, drivers, peripherals and accounts.
  3. Retest the original slow task with comparable inputs and record elapsed time.
  4. Verify files and an independent backup before erasing or selling the old Mac.
